The J. Roberts & Son company was originally founded in 1953 by Joseph "Pip" Roberts. The company is still in operation today in rural West Sussex, and has since produced magnificent firearms for the likes of John Rigby & Co. as well as W. J. Jeffrey & Co. This modern classically styled rifle (circa 1992) was built on a pre-war Mauser 98 action with a beautiful and original Daniel Fraser bolt. The rifle has the "J. Roberts & Son. London" barrel address, "MADE IN ENGLAND" on the receiver, and "IMPORTED BY BSA, MILLBROOK, NY" on the bottom of the barrel. It features a lightly engraved Mauser action, H&H style 5-shot magazine box, H&H style open sights with one standing and two folding leaves on an island rib and stocked in the classic H&H stalking rifle style with a finely figured walnut pistol grip stock featuring multi-point checkering, steel pistol grip cap, shadow line cheekpiece, sling swivel studs, small coat-of-arms plaque in the buttstock, and a black line solid recoil pad. According to the consignor, the rifle was used by the maker (at the time the owner of J. Rigby & Co.) for many years as a demonstration of their capabilities and as a style alternative to their traditional Rigbys.

Very fine overall, retains 98% refurbished blue finish with some scattered light-minor handling marks and some areas adopting an attractive plum hue. The refinished wood shows some scattered light scratches and dings consistent with use as a hunting/safari rifle, as well as crisp checkering overall. The lower portion of the recoil pad is separating from the buttstock. Mechanically excellent.
