Description:

With tapering blued round barrel signed "W.J. JEFFERY & CO. LTD. 26. BURY STREET. ST. JAMES'. LONDON" and fitted with a patent block mounted bead front sight with tunnel cover and matted quarter rib with rear sight of one fixed and two folding leaves graduated from "100" to "300" yards, each leaf with a platinum inlaid center line. Blued receiver with matted receiver ring and bridge, engine turned bolt body and magazine lifting plate, and scroll engraved and checkered bolt knob. Blued cocking piece with flag safety with gold inlaid "SAFE". Figured 14 1/4 inch pistol grip stock with checkered grip and fore-arm. Blued scroll engraved and checkered butt plate with hinged trap cover, scroll engraved casehardened pistol grip cap with hinged trap cover, and blued scroll engraved trigger guard and magazine floor plate. Blued iron sling eyes and dark horn fore-arm cap. Weight: 7 lbs. 10 oz., Birmingham nitro proof marks for 2.50 inch case, 42 1/2 grs Cordite and 170 grs bullet. The firm of W.J. Jeffery & Co. is recorded as operating out of 26 Bury Street, St. James's between 1914 and 1928. This serial number falls into a block noted by Nigel Brown in "London Gunmakers" as being in use between 1920 and 1940 which indicates that this rifle would have been made in circa 1926-1928.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as professionally refurbished during period of use. The metal parts retaining nearly all their high quality blued finish with detailed engraving and crisp marking. Stock is very fine with sharp checkering and only the slightest handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: Robert M. Lee Collection.
