Description:

This rifle was manufactured/retailed c. 1890-1891 based on the very short period of time that William Jackman Jeffery (1857-1909) was partnered with Davies (unknown) starting in 1890 and ending sometime in 1891 when the company became W.J. Jeffery & Co. which became well-known for their safari rifles and introduced notable calibers. It has military style sights and saber bayonet lug, musket style forearm, British proofs along with "crown/1/E" and "187" marks at the breech end of the barrel, "W.J. JEFFERY & DAVIS. 60. QUEEN VICTORIA STREET" on a belt around "LONDON" on the right side of the action, "8157" on the bottom, and unmarked stock. It includes an interesting W.J. Jeffery socket bayonet style muzzle/front sight cap.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall with 85% original blue finish, strong original case colors in the protected areas of the lever, crisp retailer marking, strong oiled finish on the wood, and general minor scratches and dings. Mechanically fine. This is a very rare piece with the marking of a seldom seen maker and retailer and an important link in the W.J. Jeffery & Co. story.
