Description:

This is a fabulous example of a personalized/presentation Webley & Scott "WG" (Webley & Green) Model Army revolver complete with English retailer oak case. This beautiful revolver has been personalized on the back strap with the engraved name of "W.H. McGOWAN R.A." No formal documents accompany this beautiful revolver. However, a W.H. McGowan served as an officer in the Royal Artillery around 1900-1913 and a Lieutenant Walter Howard McGowan (QM) of the Royal Artillery Corp served during WWII from 1939-45. He enlisted in 1916 and was promoted to a W.O.1 (artificer sergeant major) in August 1941 and then on to lieutenant in August 1945. The barrel rib is marked, "P. WEBLEY & SON. LONDON & BIRMINGHAM" with the left side of the barrel roll-marked "450/455". The left side of the top strap of the frame is stamped "WG" followed by "TARGET MODEL" with lower frame area stamped, "WEBLEY/PATENTS" followed by the "Winged Bullet/W&S" trademark. The right side of the frame is stamped with serial number with the rear of the cylinder stamped "455" and "782" between the chambers. It has the standard fixed nickel silver blade front sight with the fixed rear sight. The frame is fitted with checkered walnut grips and a casehardened lanyard loop on the butt. It comes with an oak storage/display case with poplar wood bottom, with brass reinforcing screws on the lid and base. The top of the lid has a round unmarked brass escutcheon plate inlaid in the center. The case is lined with navy blue fabric and has six compartments including a twenty four round cartridge block, that contains 24 rounds of original ammunition with a head stamp of "K42/VIZ". It also contains an additional small box of 12 original World War II cartridges that is printed on the lid: ".455 INCH MK IV" with an ink stamp on the side of "K22 12 42". The case also has a brass cleaning rod, a small square glass oil container with a silver lid and an ultra rare nickel plated push on front sight cover. It is unmarked but was probably made by either Webley or one of the local artisans for Webley, as it is definitely a period piece.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine with 85% plus of the original factory high luster blue finish overall with some minor bright edge wear. The back strap shows minor wear. The grips are also fine with nice original checkering on both sides, showing light wear. The case is also excellent with nice tight corners, lid and bottom, showing minor handling and wear marks overall. The various front latches, brass and hinges are all complete and original to the case. The blue felt lining is all very fine, showing light wear in some areas. The ammunition is all excellent.
