Description:

Shipped to Browning Brothers in Ogden & Salt Lake City, Utah, on 10 September 1895 with standard markings and features. The included factory letter confirms caliber, barrel length, grips, and the blue finish. Matching serial numbers on the frame and grip frame. Included is a letter from the consignor noting that this revolver was being appraised by R.L. Wilson who was researching the possibility that it was a gift from Colt to John M. Browning for designing the M1895 machine gun; however, Wilson died before he could write down his findings. According to "The Salt Lake Herald" from 21 August 1895, Browning was still in Connecticut overseeing the production of the M1895 by Colt for which he was receiving royalties for each machine gun manufactured. The inside of the grips show several markings, "WG/21" and a scratched out marking on the left panel and "JT LABRU/M" on the right. Research shows the Labrum surname present in the area of Salt Lake City at the time this revolver was shipped. The included unmarked period holster is a double loop, brown leather, "Mexican Loop" pattern with sunburst bordering.

Rating Definition:

Fair, with traces of original blue finish and silvered out original case colors remaining in the protected areas, otherwise a mottled grey patina with some scattered patches of pitting and numerous dings and heavy wear from regular holstering and use. Missing the ejector rod head. The heavily worn grips are poor. Mechanically fine. The holster is fair with extensive wear from use and some minor cracking.
