Description:

This is a beautiful example of a DWM Model 1923 "American Eagle" commercial Luger with the very desirable A.F. Stoeger markings and a crisp early brown commercial leather holster. These 1923 commercial Lugers were made expressly by DWM (and later Mauser) for the A.F. Stoeger Arms Company in New York. A.F. Stoeger was an early importer of desirable European pistols and rifles in the early 1900s and continued to do so even after WWI. Although it is estimated that over 1,000 of this model were manufactured, in reality, they are very scarce and difficult to find today, especially in this original, high end condition. This Luger has serial number "1117" without a letter suffix. The chamber has the large "American Eagle" crest, and the early DWM logo is marked on the front toggle. The right side of the barrel extension is marked "GERMANY" followed by "A.F. STOEGER, INC./NEW YORK." The front of the frame is also stamped "GERMANY" below the serial number. The upper left, rear frame area is stamped "SAFE," and since this is such an early import pistol, it is still marked "GELADEN" on the extractor. The front of the frame and underside of the barrel are both stamped with the serial number "1117" with no letter suffix as noted above. The left side of the barrel extension, underside of the barrel, and left side of the breechblock are all correctly stamped with the early "Crown/N" commercial proofmark. It is numbered in the early commercial fashion with matching serial numbers (17) stamped on the trigger, side plate, takedown lever, rear toggle, barrel and frame. The very rear of the possibly replaced breechblock is stamped with a very small "20." The remaining parts are all unnumbered. It is fitted with a beautiful set of dark walnut grips. It has two early nickel plated magazines with wood bases; both stamped "GERMANY". It is complete with an early, exceptionally well made, unmarked commercial holster. The holster was either made expressly for Stoeger or was made in the U.S. for Stoeger using a German holster as a pattern. This holster is very unusual in that it has the standard side magazine pouch with an additional pouch inside the flap for a steel cleaning rod (like the K-Date holsters) with an additional flap over the takedown tool pouch. It does include an original 4 inch steel cleaning rod but not a takedown tool. This beautiful Luger has the high polish rust blue finish with straw colored small components and checkered walnut grips.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% of the original blue finish overall with high spot wear only. The smaller parts retain 95% of their original straw colors overall with thinning of the colors on the safety lever. The grips are excellent with crisp checkering on both sides and a pressure dent visible on the upper middle part of the right grip. The holster is in near new condition. It has a light brown color overall with only a couple minor handling marks on the front with some minor scuff/rub marks on the tops of the belt loops and the corners of the flap. The stitching is tight. Its so new it still squeaks when you open and close the flap. An extremely desirable early, high condition American Eagle Commercial Luger pistol.
