Description:

1) Developed in 1944, the Waffen-SS Panzer drill uniform was introduced in the "oak leaf" and "blurred edge" patterns, with a rapid transition to the "dot" pattern for the bulk of production. This new design for Panzer crewmen seems to have been introduced in Normandy shortly before the invasion. Pictorial evidence shows that the new uniforms were most likely only intended for the LAH and the Hitler Jugen Panzer divisions. The jacket is herringbone twill construction, with the shirt in a flat brown twill and the necktie (added for display purposes) in black cloth. The jacket is single sided and non-reversible, with a flat tan herringbone twill lining, concealed front buttons, the ink stamped size marking "43 43/94/86 65" inside the right breast, no pockets, and a set of shoulder straps for an SS-unterscharfuhrer (junior section leader, comparable to a Heer unteroffizier) with Panzer pink waffenfarbe trim. The mounting of shoulder boards on the camo uniform was abolished relatively early in the life cycle of this uniform, though many soldiers carried on wearing theirs in spite of this. No maker's marks are present on the shirt, which is fitted with a set of brown buttons and modified by the addition of a 5 1/2 inch long strip of "dot" pattern camouflage fabric to the tail of the shirt; while the exact reason for the modification wasn't documented, the extra fabric would certainly help keep the shirt tucked in if the wearer were standing up and sitting down frequently, like a tank driver. This exact jacket can be seen in Beaver & Borsarello's "Camouflage Uniforms of the Waffen-SS" on page 105 and also on the cover. The SS Shoulder boards were added for the photography of the jacket (photocopies included). 2) This pair of trousers are of herringbone twill construction, unlined with white cloth pockets, lacking identifying or sizing marks, with a combination of bakelite and metal buttons and an integral belt. These exact pants can be seen in Beaver & Borsarello's "Camouflage Uniforms of the Waffen-SS" (photocopies included) on page 185.

Rating Definition:

1) Very good overall, with some mild handling marks and wear. One button is absent from the shirt, and the neck tie is a later addition for display. 2) Very good, with some minor wear overall. The pattern shows a few light spots but is overall strong and crisp. Overall a high quality and rare Waffen-SS combat uniform.
