Description:

This is an example of a WWII German K98 rifle manufactured by the J. P. Sauer & Sons factory, that has been subsequently assembled as a high turret sniper rifle. It is fitted with a post war German 6X scope manufactured by the Ajack company, mounted with a set of commercial reproduction split scope rings and bases. The WWII German turret mounted sniper rifles were one of the best, but also most costly German sniper rifles to manufacture. However, they were used from 1939 through the end of the war. The top of the receiver ring is covered by the front turret base and the receiver side wall is marked in script "Mod 98". The right side of the receiver is stamped with a single "Eagle/280" Waffenamt acceptance proof with a Eagle/37 Waffenamt proof on the barrel. The left rear side of the barrel and receiver ring are also both stamped with a single Nazi Eagle firing proof. The rifle is serial numbered "1720a" on the left rear side of the barrel and receiver ring, with the rest of the markings covered by the front turret base. The rifle is fitted with the early all milled components, trigger guard/floor plate that have been etched "1720" with unnumbered barrel bands. It currently has a blued unnumbered bolt that has a Eagle/623 Waffenamt proof on the underside of the bolt handle. The rifle receiver is fitted with a set of reproduction low turret bases with split rings and the rings are fitted with a blue commercial sniper scope that is marked on the elevation dial base with "6X42 9058" and "AJACK GERMANY" on the obverse. It has the standard thin cross-hair reticle with an unnumbered elevation range dial. The rifle has the standard inverted "v" front sight and a tangent rear sight graduated to 2000 meters. The rifle is fitted with a walnut stock and handguard with a smooth flat buttplate. The stock is numbered on the left side of the butt in large numbers "1720". It is complete with an original wartime leather sling, cleaning rod and front sight cover.

Rating Definition:

Very good as assembled with most of the refurbished blued finish showing only minor light edge wear. The walnut stock and handguard are both in fine condition showing light handling marks and scratches on the sides with 90% of its revarnished finish remaining overall. The Ajack scope, turret bases and ring set all have most of the commercial blued finish and the scope has clear sharp optics with an intact reticle. A classic restored example of a K98 high turret style sniper rifle that would be perfect for a reenactor!
