The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a 24 inch octagon barrel in .22 caliber and pistol grip stock when shipped on October 21, 1893. Although not listed in the factory letter, we believe that the engraving and finishes are factory. As Brophy explains, "Unfortunately, the few remaining factory records do not, with any regularity, indicate if the gun was factory engraved or not." The receiver features highly attractive floral scrollwork on a punch dot background along with scroll and "V" borders. Similar factory engraved scroll and border patterns are documented in Brophy's "Marlin Firearms." The left side of the frame has initials engraved in large script font in a banner. Scrollwork flanks the "MARLIN SAFETY" receiver marking at the top and bottom. The barrel has German silver blade and elevation adjustable sights and the legend ending with the 1892 patent date. The correctly unmarked upper tang is fitted with a folding peep sight. The highly figured forearm and pistol grip stock feature multi-point checkering. The buttstock has a crescent buttplate.

Very good. Strong traces original blue finish remains in and around the sheltered areas of the barrel with the balance a smooth brown patina. The magazine tube retains 40% blue. 30% of original case colors remain on the hammer, receiver, and lever. The wood is fine with minor dings and scratches and a few blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A factory engraved Model 1891 is a must have for the serious Marlin collector.
