Description:

Manufactured in 1861-1900. Many trade guns were shortened when their barrels were damaged or to make them more agile on horseback or in the woods. They were used from the colonial era and into the early 20th century and were the main firearms used by Native Americans through much of American history, including during the American Revolution, Custer's Last Stand, and other the late 19th century Indian Wars. This late period example has a Enfield style percussion lock and bolster, but otherwise remains mostly like the trade guns built for decades. It has a small blade front sight, three-stage barrel with transition bands and British proofs, "I. HOLLIS & SONS" at the center of the lock and "MAKERS TO HER MAJESTY'S/WAR DEPARTMENT" around the "IHS" monogram logo on the tail of the lock, tear drop flats on the sides and breech, large trigger guard, classic Northwest gun serpent side plate, and an added copper-tone band near the forend tip.

Rating Definition:

Fair overall as period shortened by approximately 5 inches with a mix of gray and brown patina, mild pitting concentrate around the breech, minor cracks at the lock mortise, flash wear above the hammer, and general scratches and dings. Mechanically fine.
