Barrel: 41 3/8 inch octagon

Description:

The barrel has small blade and notch sights and is signed "S. B." in the style that matches other rifles by or attributed to Samuel Baum of Union County, Pennsylvania. The barrel is secured by silver pins and plates. The patch box and other brass furniture as well as most of the stock are plain, but the left side of the butt has a silver crescent moon accent on the cheekpiece (similar to those on other Baum rifles) and elaborate incised carved scroll patterns. The lock is a later replacement and is marked "LEMAN/LANCASTER PA" and has Leman's usual scroll patterns. A brass plate has been installed behind the lock to create a proper fit.

Rating Definition:

Good as reconverted with dark artificial brown along the barrel, tool marks and moderate pitting at the breech, aged patinas on the brass and silver, dark artificial blue and brown on the lock which has faded scrollwork, and a glossy coat of varnish on the refinished stock which displays vibrant flame figure along most of the forend and crisp carving as well as a group of scrapes cut into the butt. Mechanically fine (no half-cock).
