Description:

Henry George Eckler was born in 1791in Schaefferstown, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, and moved to Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, as a boy and worked there until his death in 1862. He also served in the 2nd Regiment, First Brigade of Pennsylvania Militia during the War of 1812. The barrel has blade and notch sights and is signed "H. Eckler" on top between the rear sight and breech. It is smooth bore but may have originally been rifled and bored out after the rifling became worn or have been originally built as a "smooth rifle." The lock is marked "LONDON/WARRANTED" and has simple patterns. The wrist has an oval silver thumb plate with light border engraving, and the cheekpiece has an engraved silver hunter's star. The remaining furniture is brass and is mostly plain, but the patch box and toe plate have some light border engraving. The stock is finely striped maple and has thin molding lines along the forend, a Roman nose butt profile, and incised rococo scroll on the left side of the butt.

Rating Definition:

Very good as reconverted and shortened (breech end of the barrel and front of the stock) with dark brown patina and mild oxidation and pitting on the barrel and lock, aged patinas on the brass and silver, minor marks and scrapes, nice flame figure, some cracks (primarily in the forend), crisp carving and engraving, and legible signature. Mechanically fine.
