Description:

The barrel has blade and notch sights, "[P?] Grandstaff" in a simply banner behind the rear sight, and a long engraved tang. An unclear barrel maker's name is marked on the left flat at the breech. The rifle was most built by one of the Grandstaff gunmakers of Shenandoah County, Virginia, most likely Philip Grandstaff. The Joseph Golcher lock has scroll and dog patterns. The furniture and accents are brass with some simple border engraving and a small flourish of scrollwork on the patch box door. The left side of the butt has a manicule among the accents which is a motif noted on other Grandstaff rifles and those by other regional makers as is the hunter's star on the cheek piece.

Rating Definition:

Good as converted to flintlock from original percussion with dark brown patina on the barrel, mild pitting and oxidation concentrated at the breech, gray patina on the lock which has a refaced frizzen, aged patina on the brass, minor scratches and marks, beautiful flame figure along the length of the stock, some chips and minor cracks, repairs at the toe and tail of the lock, and smooth finish. Mechanically needs work.
