Description:

These rifles were manufactured beginning in 1883 with the "E. REMINGTON & SONS" barrel address suggests this example was manufactured prior to the company restructuring and subsequent operation underneath the name Remington Arms Co. starting in 1888. It features a base for a windgauge globe front sight (sight is missing), mid-range Vernier peep sight on the upper tang; "38," the matching serial number, and "V W." on the bottom of the barrel; matching numbered forearm with multi-point checkering and steel cap, Hepburn patent marking on the right side of the frame, a semi-pistol grip buttstock with cheek rest and a grip shaped like those on the Mid-Range No. 1 Rolling Blocks, a Swiss buttplate, and engraved scrollwork patterns and borders on the barrel, forearm cap, and action. A primitive pad has been added to the buttplate. It is re-rifled to a 40 cal. unmarked (not any of the 40 cals with the 45-70 case). Appears to be a 40-50 ss or 40-50 max. (with the 3030 or 30-40K size case).

Rating Definition:

Fine with 95% plus of the period, possibly retailer applied, nickel plating, 80% blue finish, minor marks and scratches, some wear showing under the plating, and mostly crisp markings. The wood is also very good and has crisp checkering, minor dings and scratches, and some attractive figure on the butt. Mechanically excellent.
