Description:

Only an estimated 1,000 of these revolvers were manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, in 1850-51 before production was halted due to a patent infringement suit won by Colt. This example has small blade and notch sights, "MASS. ARMS. CO./CHICOPEE FALLS" on the top strap, "WESSON'S&LEAVITT'S PATENT" on the right side of the lock in a banner, "PATENT NOV.26.1850" on the barrel catch, "LEAVITTS' PATENT APRIL 29.1837" on the rear face of the cylinder, "WESSONS' PATENT AUG. 28. 1849" on the bevel gear, and "88" on the barrel barb and face of the cylinder pin (not disassembled for inspection of lock and other components out of caution/respect for the item). In addition, the revolver features a patriotic etching on the cylinder, fine scrollwork engraving on the lock, frame, back strap, and trigger guard; gold plated finish on the latter two components as well as the grip screw washer, and fancier grade walnut grip with varnished finish. The later period case is fitted to the gun and contains a factory pocket powder flask with scroll and bald eagle patterns, a package marked "25 PER. CAPS./August 1858," an Eley Bros. cap tin, factory bullet mold and loading rod, L-shaped combination tool, and key.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% plus bright original blue finish, vibrant original case colors, minor flash wear on the nose of the hammer and nipples, nearly all of the bright original gold plating, and only mild handling and storage type wear. The grip is also excellent and has light scratches, highly attractive figure, and nearly all of the original varnish. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are very fine with minor storage wear. This is easily one of the most attractive Wesson & Leavitt revolvers we have brought to public auction!
