Description:

Matheus/Matthes Gram operated in Augsburg, Swabia, Bavaria, in circa 1749 -1777. The top of the barrel is marked "MATHEVS*GRAM*IN*AVGSPURG" and has Gram's makers mark and a "5" at the breech, probably its rack number from being part of a stand of arms in a hunting lodge. It is equipped with low profile blade and notch sights and has a later folding lens to aid in focusing on the sights. Emperor Charles VI had a similarly outfitted rifle. The lock has a flourish of traditional scrollwork at the tail and on the graceful swan-neck cock. The gilded brass furniture has elaborate patterns throughout, and the trigger plate has a double set trigger mechanism. The stock has incised acanthus scrollwork and a wooden patch box.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall as completely restored, including restocking, with traces of oxidation and pitting on the otherwise bright metal, a copper vent liner, bright replacement furniture, and minor scratches and dings on the wood and metal. Mechanically fine.
