Description:

This pistol was manufactured based on the famed Girandoni system by Joseph Oesterlein's shop in Vienna circa 1810. Pistols built based on this system are rarer than rifles. The barrel has twelve groove rifling, a small blade front sight, and silver-inlaid "Jos. Oesterleinsche Fabrique" signature accented by inlaid floral work at the breech and on the tubular ball magazine. The lock has "in Wien" in coordinating silver inlay and is engraved with floral borders. The brass breech plate has an integral notch rear sight cast and chased with oak leaves around the base, border engraving, and a large oval decorated with an eagle in low relief. The trigger guard finial and ramrod ferrules are iron and are engraved with floral patterns and surrounded by raised relief floral carving on the walnut stock. The trigger guard bow is engraved with a lion resting below a tree. The side plate has floral and border engraving. The detachable butt reservoir has a hardened leather cover with a band of "Xs" around the upper edge. Somewhat similar examples are pictured on page 516 of "The Blue Book of Airguns 12th Edition."

Rating Definition:

Fine with gray patina and minor oxidation on the iron, aged patina on the brass, and minor marks and scratches. The stock is fair with fairly extensive repairs to the edges of the forearm and lightly rubbed carving. The leather has some splits along the seam and moderate aging. The lock mechanism is mechanically good.
