Description:

This short range target pistol was manufactured by Bartolomeus Joseph Kuchenreuter (1782-1864) around 1840 in Steinweg near Regensburg, Germany. The smoothbore octagon barrel has fine blade and notch sights and is signed "Barth. Jos. Kuchenreuter" on top. It tips up via a sprung hooked release protruding through the bottom of the forend of the stock. It has a brass cylindrical cover for the spring air compressor chamber. The lock has scroll engraving and a large exposed mainspring, and the hammer is engraved with a mythical sea monster. It is equipped with a single set trigger, and the trigger guard has a spur. The walnut stock has checkered panels on the butt with floral carved borders, and the furniture has scroll engraving.

Rating Definition:

Fine with dark original case colors mixed with brown patina on the lock, aged patina on the brass, gray and brown patina on the balance, minor oxidation, general minor marks and scratches, mostly distinct checkering and engraving, some minor chips in the wood, and mild dings. Mechanically fine.
