Blued tapering Nickel steel barrel signed "W.J. JEFFERY & CO. LTD. 13, KING STREET. ST. JAMES. LONDON." and engraved with a spray of scrollwork at the breech. Block mounted bead front sight with checkered tunnel cover and muzzle protector, and lock mounted rear express sight of one fixed and four folding leaves graduated from 100 to 500 yards and each with platinum inlaid center line. Blued receiver engraved with scrollwork on the receiver ring and rear bridge, and with a Griffin & Howe side mounted quick detachable telescopic sight mount fitted with a telescopic sight. The underside with Mauser serial number "54622" dating to circa 1913-1914. Blued scroll engraved magazine floor plate and trigger guard. Figured 14 3/4 inch pistol grip stock including 3/4 inch partially leather covered recoil pad, with checkered grip and forearm, the last with dark horn forearm cap. Blued iron sling mounts. Weight: 10 lbs. 2 oz. Birmingham nitro proof marks for 55 grs. Cordite and 400 grs. bullet. This is rifle is illustrated in Speed, Schmid & Herrmann, Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles, pl. 492 (attributed to the Lester Womack estate and noting the rifle as a Jeffery No. 2 grade).

Very fine as professionally upgraded likely by Griffin & Howe. The metal parts retaining nearly all of their high quality blued finish, with well defined engraving throughout. Wood is very fine with minor handling marks and crisp checkering. The leather covered recoil pad is moderately worn. It is likely that the rifle was converted to a take down and the bolt handle modified for use with the scope by Griffin & Howe. Provenance: William J.
