Description:

Daniel Fraser (1848-1901) apprenticed under Alexander Henry (1818-1894), continued to sometimes work with his former master (including a joint patent for the Henry-Fraser Two Position Rifle), clearly manufactured and/or retailed some rifles based on Henry's designs, and was in his own right one of the more talented late 19th century gunmakers. The "DANL FRASER & CO" marking on the lock and "DANIEL FRASER & COY./4 LEITH ST TERRACE/EDINBURGH" barrel marking indicate this rifle was manufactured in 1889 or later. The company closed in the 1930s. There are no markings visible on the rifle that suggest the rifle was manufactured by Alexander Henry and retailed by Fraser. Many of the latter's rifles were based on his own side lever design. The rifle has a beaded blade front sight, two leaf rear sight (one standing) with platinum sight lines, textured/matte upper barrel flat, half-cock safety, checkered forearm with unusual forearm pin and slightly different checkering than the straight wrist stock, and finely checkered thin steel buttplate. It has matching serial numbers on multiple components and London black powder proofs.

Rating Definition:

Fine as refinished overall with 90% plus of the brown finish on the barrel, 98% of the vibrant case colors, strong blue on the small parts, crisp checkering, smooth oiled finish, minor handling and storage marks, and attractive figure. The forend appears to be a working replacement and is numbered to the gun. Mechanically excellent.
