Description:

This is an attractive restored example of a highly desirable Mauser Model 1896 pistol carbine. The same type of Mauser pistol is discussed on pages 170/171 of the book "System Mauser" by Breathed and Schroeder and also on pages 202-204 in the book "The Broomhandle Pistol 1896-1930" by Erickson and Pate. Based on the noted serial numbers of all the various model of Mauser carbines, only a few hundred of all these variations were ever manufactured by the Mauser factory. This pistol still retains its original 15 3/4 inch barrel, milled frame panels, large ring hammer, long extractor two lug firing pin and old style safety. One very noticeable feature of this pistol carbine is that it has an elongated/reinforced chamber area. The left side of the barrel extension, frame, grip frame/stock lug area, rear of the internal action parts, hammer breech bolt and follower are all matching numbered "633". The chamber area is marked "WAFFENFABRIK/MAUSER/OBERNDORF A/N", and the right rear frame panel is marked "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER/OBERNDORF A. NECKAR". The top of the rear of the breech bolt is stamped with a "Crown/U" commercial proof. It has the distinctive barrel mounted ramp front sight with a fixed bead on top and an adjustable tangent rear sight graduated from "50-500" meters. The lower receiver extension has a one-piece carbine length buttstock that is approximately 15 inch long from the front of the lower receiver metal to the buttplate. The buttstock has a hard rubber buttplate with an intertwined "MW" on the face. This beautiful pistol has a rust blued finish on the major parts and components, and the extractor, trigger, bolt stop, rear sight elevator and safety lever all have a heat blued finish. The forend and buttstock are made of a smooth European walnut.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with most of the professionally restored blue finish overall. The lower frame areas/stock lug attaching iron has been professionally restored and now retains 98% of its rust blued finish overall. The refinished forend and buttstock are both in fine condition with a nice medium, honey colored walnut showing only minor light handling marks on the forend. There is an old stock repair directly on the top flat of the pistol grip area, directly under the attaching frame. This is a solid representative example of a highly desirable early production Mauser large ring carbine.
