According to the information given on page 96 of "L.C. Smith Shotguns" by Brophy, only 890 Crown Grade shotguns were manufactured by Hunter Arms Co. and the L.C. Smith Gun Co. between 1913 and 1945. Dual bead sights with light engraving around the muzzles, matte concave rib with gold-inlaid bar near the breech, "L.C. SMITH CROWN GRADE" on the right barrel and "MADE TO ORDER BY THE HUNTER ARMS Co. FULTON, N.Y." on the left. Each barrel has a 1 3/8 inch wedge of fine scroll engraving just forward of the breech. With 2 3/4 inch chambers, automatic ejectors, and modified/full chokes (.016/.028). The receiver is fully engraved with fine scroll, leafy foliate designs, and hunting dogs on the lock plates, with a pair of pointers on the right and setters on the left. The trigger guard and break lever are also finely engraved with a gold inlaid crown on top of the lever. With Hunter One single selective trigger and a tang mounted safety. All visible serial numbers are matching. Checkered beavertail forearm and pistol grip buttstock with ebony tip insert, hard rubber grip cap, raised cheekpiece, and ventilated rubber buttplate. Barrel and stock measurements are: bore diameter at 9 inches from breech .613/.613 inch; minimum wall thickness .033/.033 inch; drop at comb 1 5/8 inches; drop at heel 2 5/8 inches; length of pull 13 inches.

Very good as refinished (barrels and stock). The receiver has 50% original subdued case colors with crisp detailed engraving, some light spotting, and smooth gray patina on the balance. The barrels have 65% of the blue finish remaining with scattered dark spotting, light markings, and edge wear. The refinished wood is good with mostly crisp checkering, small dings and scratches throughout, chipped grip cap, and deformed recoil pad. The custom attached cheekpiece is no longer flush with the buttstock. Mechanically excellent.
