Description:

With blacked replacement barrels by the maker's serial numbered "18444", engraved with scrollwork at each breech end and on the doll's head extension, the underside of each barrel stamped "WESTLEY RICHARDS STEEL". Raised rib with bead front sight, signed "WESTLEY RICHARDS. 23 CONDUIT ST. LONDON. GUN MAKERS BY APPOINTMENT TO H.M. THE KING." and numbered "1". Scroll engraved action signed "WESTLEY RICHARDS" on each side within a ribbon, blued top plate numbered "1", automatic safety with gold inlaid "SAFE" and blued side lever, and the top of the action engraved "WESTLEY RICHARDS/PATENT EJECTOR". Scroll engraved, blued, detachable floor plate and engine turned lock mechanisms respectively with gold inlaid "R" and "L". Casehardened trigger plate and blued trigger guard engraved with a spaniel flushing a pheasant, the front trigger checkered. Figured 14 1/4 inch stock including 1/4 inch wood extension with grooved butt, and checkered grip, side panels and fore-arm, the last with green horn tip. The underside of the butt has a silver escutcheon engraved with a crest. Weight: 5 lbs. 14 oz., Birmingham nitro proof marks, 2 1/2 inch chambers, chokes, .014 (Mod.) and .042 (Full), barrel dimensions: right proved at 16 (.662), measuring .667, minimum wall thickness .023; left proved at 16 (.662), measuring .668, minimum wall thickness.020.

Rating Definition:

Fine, with 70% of the blue remaining on the barrels with scratches throughout, areas of thinning, and clear markings. The action is mostly bright with traces of case colors on the trigger plate and some blue remaining on the floor plate, top plate, lever and the inside of the trigger guard. The outside of the trigger guard has a cleaned bright finish. The engraving is clear throughout. Wood is good with worn checkering and numerous dents and handling marks throughout and several small chips on the bottom of the stock head and wrist. Mechanically fine.

As described in "A". Numbered "2" of the pair, with replacement barrels by the maker's serial numbered "18445". Weight: 5 lbs. 14 oz., Birmingham nitro proof marks, 2 1/2 inch chambers, chokes .016 (Mod.) and .043(Full) choke, barrel dimensions: right proved at 16 (.662), measuring .668, minimum wall thickness 26; left proved at 16 (.662), measuring .667, minimum wall thickness 26. In maker's brass cornered oak and leather fitted double case lined in dark green baize, the lid with Westley Richards trade label, and some accessories including a nickel plated Westley Richards oil bottle. The exterior named "FRED GRAHAM/ARDENCAPLE CASTLE/HELENSBURGH".

Rating Definition:

Fine, with 80% of the blue remaining on the barrels with scratches throughout, areas of thinning, and clear markings. The action is mostly bright with traces of case colors on the trigger plate and some blue remaining on the floor plate, top plate, lever and the inside of the trigger guard. The outside of the trigger guard has a cleaned bright finish with some areas of pitting. The engraving is clear throughout. Wood is good with worn checkering and numerous dents and handling marks throughout and a small crack on the right side of the forearm. Mechanically fine. Case with numerous exterior storage and handling marks and scuffs, one strap incomplete, the other torn. Some wear to lining, label stained and holed.
