Description:

Intended to be a sales companion to the Model 1881, the Model 1888 was developed in response to the popularity of Winchester and Colt's pistol-caliber repeating rifles and carbines. While the 1888 was a solid design, Marlin's desire to distinguish itself from the competition resulted in the side-ejecting Model 1889, which would establish the signature Marlin configuration and condemn the 1888 to a two-year production run, with less than 5,000 made in total of which around 1,727 were chambered in .44-40 like this rifle. Blade front and elevation adjustable rear sights on a barrel marked with the two-line address/1887 patent date and "44 W" caliber marking. Smooth straight wrist stock, non-factory added sling swivels with the forward being soldered to the magazine tube, and crescent steel buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 60% original blue finish with the balance thinning to a brown. The receiver shows signs of abrasion. The wood is fine with a number of minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
