The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a round barrel in .40-60 caliber, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock and casehardened finish when received in the warehouse on October 16, 1885 and shipped the same day. The rifle was fitted with an octagon barrel (current configuration) on April 2, 1887, and reshipped on April 4. Blade front sight and "1876" marked folding ladder rear sight on a barrel with the two-line address/patent dates legend ahead of the rear sight and "40-60 WCF" at the breech. A mid-range Vernier sight is mounted on the upper tang. The cartridge elevator is marked "40-60." The serial number is stamped on the lower tang. The nicely figured walnut pistol grip stock features checkering, an ebony insert on the underside of the grip and trapdoor crescent buttplate. Comes with a five piece cleaning rod. The left side of the lower tang is marked "2407 XX." The assembly number "2407" is repeated on the stock inlet and buttplate.

Fine. The barrel, magazine tube and dust cover retain 40% original blue finish with a smooth brown patina on the balance. 50% original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The remaining surfaces retain 30% plus original case colors. The wood is also fine with minor dings and scratches and some wear in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
