Manufactured in 1886 as a third model featuring a dust cover guide rail integral to the receiver and dust cover featuring a serrated rear edge. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a half octagon barrel, plain trigger, cloverleaf sight, checkered pistol grip stock, and casehardened finish when received in the warehouse on September 20, 1886 and shipped the same day. The barrel has the two-line address/patent dates marking, dovetail blade front sight, and elevation adjustable cloverleaf rear sight. "38 CAL" is marked on the cartridge elevator, and the upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873." Highly figured walnut pistol grip stock with checkering, ebony insert on the bottom of the grip and trapdoor crescent buttplate. Includes a four piece cleaning rod. The left side of the lower tang is marked "1218 XX 38." "1218" is repeated on the stock inlet and buttplate.

Fine. 50% thinned original blue finish remains on the dust cover, barrel and magazine tube with the balance a smooth gray patina. 70% original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. 40% original case colors remain on the frame, hammer and lever, and the buttplate retains some silvered out original case colors. The wood is also fine with minor dings and scratches and a few blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
