Description:

The included Cody letter describes this Model 1886, as: "Type: Carbine, Caliber: 45/70, Fancy stock, Sling and swivel" and "No sling ring". The letter further states that this carbine was received in the Winchester warehouse on February 11, 1893 and shipped on February 13, 1893. The carbine has a 22 inch round barrel with full-length magazine. The barrel has a steel block front sight mounted ahead of the barrel band and a folding leaf rear sight marked "1873" near the top of the leaf and graduated to "9". Factory sling swivels are mounted on the lower barrel band and stock. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The left side of the receiver has no provision for a staple-mounted saddle ring. The stock and forearm are nicely figured, fancy grade, "XX", American walnut with a semi-matte finish. The lower left side of the receiver tang is stamped with the assembly number:"707", the wood grade: "XX" and "C" (Carbine). "707" is also stamped in the upper tang inlet of the stock. The barrel, magazine and barrel bands have a blue finish. The bolt and trigger are bright blue and the loading gate has a fire blue finish. The hammer, lever and carbine style buttplate are color casehardened. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "-< MANUFACTURED BY THE >-/-< WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN U.S.A. >-" between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The caliber designation "45-70" is stamped on the top of the barrel immediately in front of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886.-". The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower receiver behind the trigger. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the rear tang screws. This carbine is pictured on the front cover and page 31 of the Summer 2018 edition of "THE WINCHESTER COLLECTOR".

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine. This extremely rare carbine has at least 85% of the blue on the barrel. The Winchester legend and caliber markings are crisp. The blue on the magazine has faded slight and developed traces of plum-colored patina. The upper and lower barrel bands show light finish wear with some scuff marks on the sides of the lower band. The bolt retains 95% of the bright original blue finish. The trigger has 60% of the blue finish. 90% plus of the original niter blue finish is present of the loading gate. The sides and top of the receiver and the upper and lower tangs retain 90% plus of the casehardened finish with strong case colors on the receiver sides. The bottom of the receiver shows handling wear and the case colors have faded to a mottled brown patina. The lower left side of the receiver has some scattered age discoloration. The hammer and lever retain about 85% of the original case colors with fading on the contact points on the bottom of the lever. The case colors on the carbine style buttplate have dulled slightly but remain at least 85% complete. The nicely figured, fancy grade, stock and forearm remain in very fine condition and retain at least 90% of the original oil finish. The lower left wrist has a professionally made three inch horizontal repair which is barely visible. The lower half of the forearm shows some finish wear and has a number of shallow handling marks on the left side. The finish on the stock wrist is darkened slightly from handling but the stock shows minimal handling or storage marks. Standard grade Winchester Model 1886 carbines are scarce and highly desirable. Model 1886 carbines with any special order features are rare. The Model 1886 carbine research using the Cody Museum records published in the Summer 2018 edition of "THE WINCHESTER COLLECTOR" indicates only 2 carbines were recorded with "Fancy stock, carbine butt." This is an outstanding, fully documented example of one of the rarest Winchester Model 1886 carbines extant.
