Description:

Manufactured in 1894. The receiver is factory engraved with nice floral scrollwork, simple scroll bordering and a game scene depicting a standing buck inside a circular panel. The engraved motif is very similar to Marlin's No. 1 pattern as illustrated in Brophy's "Marlin Firearms" on page 531. The barrel is equipped with a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight and is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking on the top flat ahead of the rear sight. The top of the receiver is stamped "MARLIN SAFETY." Mounted on a highly figured forearm and pistol grip stock featuring multi-point checkering. The buttstock is fitted with a crescent buttplate. The barrel, magazine tube and forearm cap are blue, and the remaining surfaces are casehardened.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel and magazine retain 80% original blue finish with the balance thinning to a brown. The receiver, hammer, and lever retain 50% plus original case colors. The buttplate has faded to a mottled gray patina mixed with faded flashes of original case colors. The wood is fine showing numerous minor dings and scratches and crisp checkering overall. Action needs work as hammer does not hold at the half and full cock positions. A highly attractive and scarce factory engraved Model 1889 for your growing antique lever action collection. A must have for any serious Marlin collector!
