Description:

This carbine was manufactured c. 1859-1863 as a percussion carbine for use in the Civil War and was one of approximately 27,000 carbines returned to Sharps for alteration and refurbishment for use with the then new .50-70 cartridge with three groove rifling in the late 1860s. Some of these carbines were then used in the Indian Wars. Standard Sharps and Lawrence patent markings, "GC" U.S. Ordnance inspector initials on the left side of the barrel, "S" cartouche just ahead of the action, and a "DFC" banner cartouche on the stock which, unusually for a Model 1859, has no patch box.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refurbished, retains 85% blue finish, 70% case colors, and some of the screws showing strong nitre blue with the balance a smooth grey patina. The reoiled wood is very good with minor dings and dents scattered throughout and visible cartouches.
