Description:

A similarly marked example is on page 150 of "The American Bayonet, 1776-1964" by A.N. Harding Jr. These bayonets were designed by Admiral John Dahlgren as a replacement for the sword pattern bayonets. The Dahlgren Bowie was designed for use in close quarters combat during boarding actions, as a utility knife on-board, and as a bayonet. The blade is 12 inches long and is marked "U.S.N./D.R./1862" and "anchor/P/G G" on the right ricasso and "AMES MFG. CO./CHICOPEE/MASS." on the left. The brass hilt has a "DR" cartouche on the butt. Includes a leather scabbard and frog.

Rating Definition:

Fine, light pitting and gray patina on the blade with chipped point; dark aged patina and some dings on the hilt, minor handling and storage wear on the walnut grip, and mild overall wear. The scabbard and frog are both very good with mild storage type wear including flex wear above the drag.
