Description:

One of approximately 6, 686 Model 1862 Sharps & Hankins purchased by the U.S. Navy between 1862-1865. The carbine features the unique leather barrel cover to protect the blue barrel from rust. The leather is secured by two screws at the breech. The frame is casehardened with the 2nd Model floating firing pin mounted in the recoil shield. The stock is an oil-finished walnut with a brass buttplate. The barrel has a pedestal mounted brass blade front sight, and a tangent style rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The right side of the receiver is marked: "SHARPS/&/HANKINS/PHILADA" and the left side is marked: "SHARPS/PATENT/1859". The serial number is located on the upper tang, bottom of the barrel and frame. The lever bar is marked "4311". The carbine has no visible inspection proof or acceptance marks. Mounted with a smooth straight grip stock with brass buttplate and a sling swivel.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The frame retains 40% of the original case colors, mainly on the right side and upper tang, some of the original pattern on the left side and a smooth brown and gray patina on the balance. The leather barrel wrap remains very good with some minor separation of the stitching on the lower rear, caused by cycling the action, otherwise there are scattered minor age cracking, flaking and scuffs. The stock is also fine with some moisture spotting in the varnish and as few minor dings and handling marks. The markings are clear. The mechanics are excellent.
