Description:

One of less than approximately 400 manufactured circa 1815 to partially fill a contract for 1,455 arms (from various makers) for the state of Massachusetts. Federal reimbursement for these arms was delayed many years due to Massachusetts appearing to be less than willing to participate in the War of 1812. This example has a "N.HAVEN" marked lock and appears to be an interesting mixture of the two types supplied in this contract, having the Type I "Sea Fencible" low comb stock and rack number "97" repeated on the stock flat and twice on the buttplate. While the more standard buttplate and "P" oval proof on the barrel are typical of the Type II. It has the Massachusetts militia marking "MS" on the barrel with another "MS" and a faint "JN" cartouche on the stock flat.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus, showing mostly a smooth brown patina, light grey patina in sheltered areas, and minor oxidation/pitting. The wood is fine with minor dings and scratches throughout, a minor crack and chip near the front of the lock, and some light chipping near the toe of the buttplate. Will not hold at full cock.
