Description:

D. Dana is believed to be Daniel Dana of Canton, Massachusetts. Other D. Dana marked locks have been found on muskets used by Massachusetts militia units. It is unknown whether he fabricated complete muskets or only parts. He is known to have helped design lathes for making gun barrels with Anthony Olney that were used by the Harpers Ferry Armory. The barrel has a bayonet stud on the bottom, a small blade front sight, "US" on top at the breech, and "P/eagle head/V" on the upper left at the breech. The lock has "D.DANA" at center. The furniture is brass and includes a trigger guard with an acorn finial. "IE" is punched in dots on the buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with even brown patina, light oxidation/pitting, legible markings, dark aged patina on the brass, and mild scrapes and dings on the fine wood. Mechanically fine.
