Description:

Pomeroy manufactured 21,600 Model 1816 Muskets under government contract between 1817 and 1836. This example falls fairly early in that range and is marked "1820/US" on the tail of the lock plate and "eagle/L. POMEROY" at center. The barrel is marked with standard proofs at the breech and there is a faint cartouche on the left stock flat. Integral cone front sight on the top barrel band which is marked with a large "13" and three-leaf rear sight with leaves marked "100", "300", and "500". The number of these conversions manufactured in unknown but it is believed that New York contracted for 1,200 of them in 1857, with less than 300 being delivered, making this a very rare U.S. military arm.

Rating Definition:

Very good, mostly bright with a speckling of darker grey patina and a dark grey patina on the hammer with some evidence of cleaning and some minor pitting on the hammer. The wood is good with minor dings and scratches throughout, a moderate chip along the ramrod channel, and a 3 inch sliver absent on each side just above the bottom barrel band. Mechanically excellent.
