Description:

This is one of many Model 1816s that underwent modification prior to the Civil War. E. Remington & Sons completed a contract for 20,000 Maynard primer locks and percussion bolsters that were then sent to the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia where they were used on Model 1816 muskets. Most had rifled barrels and were fitted with long range leaf sights like this example. "REMINGTON'S/ILION, N.Y./1857/U.S." is marked vertically behind the hammer on the lock plate. "J.T." marked barrel, and the barrel tang marked "1856" and "N/5". "3" marked on most of the smaller parts. Includes leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Fine, showing mostly bright finish with a speckling of brown patina and grease residue. The reoiled wood is very fine with some scattered minor dings and some chipping along the barrel and ramrod channels. Mechanically excellent.
