Description:

This pistol is pictured on page 227 of "The William M. Locke Collection" by Frank Sellers. Joseph Henry of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, manufactured a limited number of flintlock military pistols under government contracts from 1807 and 1808. Henry was contracted to manufacture a total of 650 pairs in that period; however, the total number of pistols actually completed is not known, and many government contractors failed to complete their orders. A "Gun Report" article indicated he delivered 1468 pistols and purchased 724 of them back. The barrel has a small blade front sight, "J. HENRY PHILA" on top, and an "eagle head/CT" proof. The "CT" has been reported as meaning contract rather than Connecticut per Flayderman. "The Gun Report" article indicated this stamp was associated with Jacob Shough who inspected in 1810 indicating this pistol would be among the last delivered. The lock has a teat at the tail, a rounded flash pan with high fence, and reinforced ring-neck hammer and is marked "US" at the center and "J. HENRY/PHILA" at the tail. The inside of the lock has "IG" and forged mainspring. The ramrod is hickory with a swelled tip. The stock has an oval "V" cartouche over another cartouche and the added number "1810."

Rating Definition:

Very good as reconverted to flintlock configuration including some repaired cracks in the refinished stock, mild pitting, generally distinct markings, aged patina on the brass, minor marks and scratches, and some slight flaking at the edges of the stock mortises. Mechanically fine.
