Description:

Remington Arms Company completed a contract for 20,000 Maynard primer locks and percussion bolsters that were then sent to the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia where they were used on Model 1816 muskets. Most had rifled barrels and were fitted with long range leaf sights (not featured on this example). It is marked "1857" on the barrel tang, "JT" on the top of the breech plug, a partial "N.J" (New Jersey) on the left side rear of the barrel, and "REMINGTON'S ILION, N.Y. 1858 U.S." vertically behind the hammer on the lock plate. It has a bayonet lug on top of the barrel and a front sight integral to the front double barrel band. "11/V" is marked on the right side of the butt and heel. The buttplate has the standard "US" marking.

Rating Definition:

Fair with mottled gray patina and pitting, scattered dings and tool marks, some minor hairline cracks in the stock around the lock mortise and rear lock screw, and moderate overall wear. Mechanically fine.
