Description:

S.C. Miller was a well known gunsmith and target rifle builder active in the New Haven area from approximately 1849 to 1860. The rifle features a brass false muzzle, globe front sight, "S.C. MILLER/NEW HAVEN/CT/CAST STEEL" on top of the barrel, an adjustable peep sight with long two-part base marked "MANUFACTURED BY H. LERIEMONDIE'S" on the rear section, single set trigger, classical scroll and shell engraving on breech end of the barrel, lock, and most of the German silver furniture, highly figured varnished walnut with checkered forend and wrist, triple cap box on the right side of the butt, and reposed deer cheek rest plate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% original blue finish fading to a plumb brown along the barrel, subtle original case colors on the lock, light aged patina on the furniture, minor oxidation, chip on the hammer nose, some casting pits in the German silver, crisp engraving and checkering, light scrapes and dings, a few minute chips, glossy original varnish and attractive figure on the stock. Mechanically fine if trigger is set first. This is a very attractive and interesting mid-19th century American target rifle.
