This rifle was manufactured circa 1855-1856 based on the Allen, Thurber & Co. address. Only a few hundred muzzle loading rifles and shotguns were manufactured in total in the 1840s to 1860s during the various Ethan Allen partnerships as production was mostly focused on handguns. This fine rifle has holes on the muzzle for a four prong false muzzle, a globe front sight, "ALLEN THURBER & CO, No. 152/CAST-STEEL/WORCESTER" on top of the barrel between two eagle stamps, a "lollipop" peep rear sight, double set triggers, scroll engraving with punched backgrounds, a finely engraved dog's head panel scene on the cap box, scroll engraved German silver plate on the left side of the butt, and checkered wrist.

Fine with strong traces of original blue and 25% casehardened finish, dark brown and gray patina throughout, crisp engraving, light oxidation, and minor overall wear. The buttstock is also fine and has crisp checkering, some mild dings and scrapes, and slight texture to the finish. Mechanically fine. The ramrod and false muzzle are absent.
