Description:

The Kuchenreuter family of Regensburg were among the finest of the Germanic gunsmiths in the 18th and 19th century. Johann Adam Kuchenreuter was active until 1869 and was the court gunmaker for both the Princely House of Thurn & Taxis of Regensburg and the King of Bavaria. The browned barrel has shallow rifling, a dovetailed blade front sight, and "J: Adam Kuchenreuter" in gold inlay on top. The casehardened bolster has floral engraving, and the engraved upper tang is equipped with a three-leaf notch rear sight. The lock has a bestial designed hammer stall, border and scroll engraving, "a Regensburg" at center, and a bestial and scrollwork pattern hammer. The silver furniture has a variety of engraving patterns including winged beasts on the rear lock screw plate. The stock has a horn forend cap, checkering with carved borders, and raised floral carving around a blank escutcheon at the top of the wrist.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 70% plus of the brown finish on the barrel, bright original gold, dark case colors and patina on the casehardened components, some minor oxidation, aged patina on the furniture, distinct markings and engraving patterns, absent ramrod tip (presumably horn), crisp checkering and raised relief carving on the stock, minor marks and scratches, and minor mostly aged related wear. Mechanically excellent. This is a very attractive example of the Kuchenreuter family's mid-19th century craftsmanship and may have been owned by a member of the court in Regensburg or Munich.
