Description:

Philipp Colnot's shop was active in the early 19th century until 1817 in Vienna, Austria. The style of this is reminiscent to the French Empire style pistols by French gunmakers such as Boutet and LePage. During this period Austria transitioned from a state of the Holy Roman Empire into the Empire of Austria and helped defeat Napoleon. The blued barrels have interesting rifling consisting of wide lands and four groups of three faint grooves and have dovetailed silver blade front sights, gold inlaid bands and floral patterns, golden oval vent liners, and "Colnot" in script in gold on top. The barrel tangs are numbered "1" and "2" respectively. The locks have "in Wien" in gold inlay, gold lined semi-waterproof flashpans, frizzen spring rollers, rope borders, and floral and martial motifs. The pistols are equipped with semi-concealed single set triggers and finely relief engraved furniture with floral patterns. The stocks have fish scale checkering on the wrists.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 70% of the original blue finish, showing areas of brown patina and light handling marks overall. Mild spotting is visible around the flashpan, with a bright gray patina forming on the lock. The stock is also very fine and has a few hairline cracks, mild pressure dents, and scratches. Mechanically excellent.

B) Colnot Dueling Pistol

Manufacturer: Colnot
Model: Flintlock
Type: Pistol
Gauge: 50
Barrel: 9 3/8 inch octagon
Finish: blue/gold/bright
Grip:
Stock: walnut

Catalog Page: 158

Description:

"2" gun of the pair. See A.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 60% of the original blue finish, brown patina, and scattered spotting. The otherwise fine stock has a wrist that was broken and mended during the period of usage as well as dings and scratches on the balance. Mechanically excellent. This is a very attractive pair of Austrian Empire dueling pistols, certainly something we see less often than those out of Belgium, France, and England.
