Finely Engraved Erttel Marked Superposed Barrel Flintlock Pistol

Court gunsmith Andreas Ertell and his sons Johann Andreas (b. 1689) and Johann Georg (b. 1700) were active in Dresden, Saxony until around 1725, 1764, and 1763 respectively. Some of Johann Georg Ertell's work can be seen in "The Splendor of Dresden, Five Centuries of Art Collecting" and in the Dutch National Museum (Rijksmuseum) collection, and other pistols of this pattern are known with his full name suggesting he is the maker of this very attractive pistol. The upper barrel has a rounded blade front sight, and both barrels have three cut bands at the breech end. The right lock is signed "ERTTEL" below the pan, and the left lock has "A DRESDE" at the same location. Both locks also have scroll and border engraving and are finely sculpted. The right lock and front trigger fire the upper barrel, and the left lock and rear trigger fires the lower barrel. The trigger guard is grooved, and the pommel cap has a grotesque mask. The forend slabs and stock have raised flats and are nicely figured walnut. A ramrod is fitted to the right side between the barrels.

ConditionFine with bright metal surfaces, distinct markings and engraving, faint speckling, chipped edges of the pommel cap, beautiful figure in the very good refinished wood, and minor overall wear. Mechanically fine.
