Description:

This S&W New Model No. 3 revolver is documented by serial number as converted to .44 S&W Russian by the factory for Japanese sale and shipment in Robert Neal and Roy Jink's "Smith & Wesson 1857-1945" on page 194. The revolver is one of 786 New Model No. 3s that were originally chambered in .44-40 and then factory converted to .44 Russian for sale to the Japanese government. The .44-40 caliber was unpopular and S&W converted much of the stock on hand to .44 S&W Russian to fill orders. For the New Model No. 3 revolvers exported to Japan the conversion was necessary because "the Japanese government had already purchased substitutional quantities" of various S&W model revolvers chambered in .44 S&W Russian. This Japanese Army issue model has the 1 9/16 inch long cylinder and top strap. Japanese unit or regimental markings are on the left grip panel. The revolver was one of 538 units shipped to Takata & Co., Yokohama, Japan, on March 30, 1895. Comes with a leather holster rig featuring a cartridge box with Japanese markings on the inside of the flap. Similar Japanese unit or regimental markings are also on the back of the belt.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 60% plus original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. Some original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger guard. The grips are fine with scattered blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The holster is fine with flex wear and minor handling/storage marks. The worn belt and cartridge box are good.
