Description:

This is another example of an extremely rare experimental/prototype M1921 bayonet with its original arsenal altered/shortened M1910 canvas scabbard. This rare bayonet is fully discussed on pages 177 and 178 of the excellent book "The American Bayonet" by Hardin. The upper edge of the blade is marked "U.S." on the right side and "SA/Ordnance Shell and Flame/1921" on the left, with NO serial number having been applied. The exact date of manufacture by whom are still under question; however, it is speculated that it was produced early post WWI based on the experiences during WWI where a shortened bayonet was much easier to wield in combat and with a dagger point that still provided a very effective stabbing type weapon. This design was never fully approved; however, it probably evolved as the forerunner/prototype of the later M1905E1 bayonet that was developed at the start of WWII. The uniqueness of this model is obviously the shortened 8 1/2 inch, double edge, blade that is hollow ground on each side, and retains the standard length M1905 cross-guard and handle that can attach to either the 1903 Springfield or the M1 Garand. The other interesting/unique aspect is the arsenal shortened M1910 canvas scabbard. Upon visual inspection, the authentic workmanship clearly leads one to acknowledge that it was performed either by Springfield or probably by Rock Island Arsenal as they were the original manufacturer of those scabbards. The scabbard has the standard metal throat with the light brown canvas cover with a leather tip. The back side of the leather tip is marked "R.I.A./1921"

Rating Definition:

Fine with a darkened old age arsenal refurbished type bluing, mixed with a light gray patina along the edges and center section of the blade. The wooden handles are almost smooth overall showing only light turning/machining ridges, mixed with some small dents and dings on this sides with a larger scratch on the left side. The rare/unique scabbard is in fine plus condition with all the stitching remaining with clear maker's marks on the back side. The canvas material does show darker stained areas from use and handling over the years.
