Description:

This is an exceptionally rare example of an original type II Model 1909 Experimental Bolo Bayonet complete with its original and correct leather scabbard, as described and shown on page 220 of the book "The American Bayonet" by Hardin. This model was a continuation of the original M1909 design that was manufactured in very limited number, probably no more than 50-100 total. It is marked on the side "SA/1910" and on the obverse "U.S./7639", and although it carries a high serial number, this was just a continuation of the original serial numbers assigned to the various Bolo bayonets. Obviously this was the U.S. Ordnance Dept. attempt to provide a bolo/machete type weapon for use in chopping brush or vegetation the field that could also double as a bayonet when fitted to the M1903 Springfield rifle. It may have been a great idea for use in the field as a bolo/machete but terrible for use as a bayonet. The tang of the handle is fitted with a push pin, locking device on the left side, very similar to the original M1905 bayonet, with a large curved rear section of the handle so that you could easily grip it when used as a bolo/machete. It has a 14 inch length blade with 5 1/2 inch length handle, (19 1/2 inches overall), with a heavy, 2 1/4 inch wide, curved, front section, which provides extra front weight for ease in chopping. The tang is fitted with set of smooth walnut handles that are held on with three large brass rivets As noted it comes with its original and correct large leather scabbard that is "R.I.A./1917" on the back side with a single large leather belt loop.

Rating Definition:

Very good with its original in the white, polished blade, showing some old dark tarnish on both sides with areas of small corrosion along the edge. The markings are clear and distinct. The wooden handle have darkened with age and use and both sides showing minor pressure dent and dings on the sides. The crossguard and locking latch piece both have been lightly cleaned and do show old corrosion. Obviously it was used/tested in the field at some time. The scabbard is in excellent condition with a excellent light brown color overall with clear sharp markings. The throat of the scabbard retains 95% of its original blackened color overall. An extremely rare M1909 Type II experimental/prototype Bolo Bayonet.
