Description:

This is a rare example of a "North American Arms Company Limited" Model 1911 semi-automatic pistol that was produced towards the end of WWI in Quebec Canada. In early July 1918, the U.S. Government issued a contract for 500,000 Model 1911 pistols to the North American Arms Co., of Quebec Canada. The North American Arms Company leased the Ross Rifle plant to actually do the manufacturing and as part of the contractual arrangement with the US Government supplying all the raw materials. However due to the material shortages during the war the was only able to supply enough material to produce approximately "100 sets" of prototype or tool room parts, some of which were later assembled into completed pistols. However due to the Armistice, the contract was canceled in December of 1918 with no examples of completed pistols ever being accepted by the U.S. Government. As part of the contract termination settlement, the U.S. Ordnance Board did eventually accept/reclaim a large portion of the manufactured parts and assemblies that were later disposed of. These 100 pistols were uniquely marked with only a controlling serial number on the left lower area of the frame and the left rear section of the slide, as well as the three line, factory slide markings. The slide is marked: "MANUFACTURED BY/NORTH AMERICAN ARMS CO. LIMITED/QUEBEC, CANADA" along with control number "64" on the rear section of the slide, frame and trigger. The pistol itself is nicely machined and produced and the configuration of the parts and components are basically identical to the standard Colt Model 1911 models. The hammer is a wide version very similar to the Colt production models except it is "uncheckered" on the spur. It is fitted with a set of standard WWI diamond pattern, checkered walnut grip panels. The modern replacement magazine is an all blued version stamped on the left side "45 ACP" with two small, unthreaded holes in the base plate.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 85% of a period refurbished blue finish overall with general light thinning overall with a gray patina on the grip strap mixed with some old oxidation spotting in various areas. The blue finish on the sides of the slide was removed/polished off however the markings are still clear and readable. The replacement grips are in fine condition with clear distinct checkering overall, with a dark brown color. Mechanically excellent. A solid representative example of a rare North American Arms Model 1911 pistol.
