This is an excellent example of a very late post-war production standard service grade Springfield M1 Garand that is fitted with a National Match barrel. This example has the "X" marked serial number indicating it was a duplicate serial number. It is accompanied by a sales receipt indicating that it was sold in 1957 as a private purchase rifle. At the time of production, it was fitted with a late production NM marked barrels dated 1956; however, it is not a full National Match rifle. Towards the end of the normal M1 Garand production cycle, just prior to switching tooling up for the new M14 rifles, Springfield Armory was using any and all in stock parts and barrels to finish up producing the standard service grade M1 rifles, so its not uncommon to find late 5.8-6 million range production rifles with a various NM marked pats. It has the standard receiver markings over the serial number. The barrel is marked "SA F6535448 5 56 A2278", with the faint NM markings on the front left side of the barrel. The breech area of the barrel remains in the white. It is fitted with all the standard late production post-war Springfield Armory "65" series marked parts, that include the bolt assembly, the operating rod and complete trigger group. It also has the late production front and rear sight set, and it has the correct post-war wide base gas cylinder and square top gas cylinder lock with a contract "BS" marked gas cylinder plug. It is fitted with a nice matching dark walnut stock and handguard set that has the proper DOD acceptance cartouche on the left side of the stock with a single "P" in the pistol grip area. It comes with a 5 piece cleaning rod, grease pots, and plastic oiler stored inside the buttstock.

Excellent plus with 99% of the original dark green parkerized finish overall showing wear and finish loss on the side of the receiver rail from light firing and use. The stock and handguard set are excellent with nice visible cartouches and proofs and only minor handling marks on the sides.
