Documented First Production Savage Model 1914 Slide Action Rifle Serial Number 1000 with Factory Letter

The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle serial number 1000 as the first Model 1914 Savage produced for the commercial market. Production of the Model 1914 started in 1914 at serial number 1000, thus this is the lowest serial number Model 1914. An included letter from noted firearms historian Roe S. Clark states the factory records do not record the original shipment, but records do indicate the rifle was returned for repairs on November 5, 1917 by Charles A. Nelson, a designer/engineer for Savage. Clark concluded, "Quite possibly [this rifle] was given to Nelson for his work in developing [the Model 1914] or for some other reason." The several special order features on this rifle certainly suggest that it was intended for presentation. The rifle has special order deluxe walnut grooved forearm and pistol grip stock featuring exhibition type fancy checkering. The receiver features a rare factory matted, non-glare type engraving consisting of a stippled pattern. The barrel markings appear to have been originally highlighted in gold. Dovetail blade front sight, scarce full adjustable Savage notch rear sight and folding tang peep sight. The rifle was awarded two "special award" ribbons (included) at the 1972 Fair's Gun Indian Show held in Los Angeles.

ConditionVery fine, retaining 85% faded original blue finish showing cycling and scattered high edge wear and some smooth brown patina on the buttplate. The reoiled wood is fine with some minor handing marks and a few blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
