Manufactured in 1904 and exhibiting a wonderful factory D grade engraving. The D grade engraving on the sides of the receiver feature oval vignettes surrounded by full coverage fine engraved scrollwork. The vignettes depict a running American bison on the left side and a slinking tiger on the right side. A large vignette of a bull moose surrounded by ornate flourishes is on the underside of the receiver. Additional scrollwork is found on the receiver ring, upper tang, lever boss, lever and barrel at the breech. The remainder of the receiver has very fine stippling. Panels of stippling appear on the lever, and there is stippling on top of the bolt. For a similar engraving see David Royal's "A Collector's Guide to the Savage 99 Rifle" on page 36. The rifle is equipped with a German silver blade front sight, elevation adjustable rear sight, Lyman tang peep sight and cocking indicator on the bolt. Matching numbers are found on the receiver, barrel, buttstock and forearm. The select walnut forearm and straight grip stock feature fancy fleur-de-lis checkering. The buttstock is fitted with a Savage hard rubber buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retaining 98% plus bright original high polish blue finish showing minimal handling evidence. 95% original case colors remain on the lever. The engraving is crisp. The wood is also excellent showing minor handling marks and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. No Savage Model 1899 collection can be considered complete without a Victor Grade.
