Description:

The Model 1819 Hall was the first widely issued military breech loading firearm and the first firearm manufactured with totally interchangeable parts. Many were converted to percussion by the North and the South at the outbreak of the Civil War in an attempt to alleviate weapons shortages. This one is dated "1832", marked "PAT/MAY 21/1811/L.C", and has been converted to percussion. The conversion shows similar characteristics to examples claimed to have been done by Holly Springs Armory or Columbus Arsenal in Mississippi in the book "Confederate Rifles & Muskets: Infantry Small Arms Manufactured in the Southern Confederacy 1861-1865" by John Murphy and Michael Madaus. These similarities being the upper and right sides of the block ground level, the new percussion upper portion of the hammer brazed onto the bottom half of the existing flintlock cock, hammer spur with no knurling and a hole through the hammer, and what appears to be the typical block numbered to stock, with a "7" on the right side of the block and again at the top of the wrist. It otherwise has the standard markings and features.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period converted to percussion, showing a mottled brown-grey patina with some patches of the original brown lacquer finish. The wood is very good with minor dings and scratches throughout and a few chips along the ramrod channel. Mechanically excellent.
